R-1 vs R-1W
There are several tractor tire tread depth/pattern designations in the market: R-1, R-1W, R-2, R-3 and R-4. Let’s discuss the two main ag tread type designations – R-1 & R-1W.
One of the most common questions we hear is whether R-1 or R-1W tires are best- let’s look at the difference.
The tread depth of the R-1 is shallower than the R-1W. Looking at the above tables, the R-1 tire is better suited for high speed & high load applications. A self-propelled 4-wheel sprayer is a perfect example. The shallower tread of the R-1 means better heat dissipation because of less rubber which enables the tire to run cooler.
R-1W tires will have a deeper tread depth, usually 15%-20%. The R-1W tire will perform better in wet, muddy and sticky conditions. The “W” in the R-1W designation stands for “Wet”. The deeper tread depth should also provide more usage hours before the tires need replaced.
